Every day that we walk this earth, we are indebted to the soldiers and leaders who have fought for our freedom. Memorial Day is a special day for our country that helps us honor these individuals. Year after year, the film industry continues to develop war movies that remind us of our soldiers’ past. These five movies examine the most famous wars through some of the best and unique points of view.
5. ‘Full Metal Jacket’ (1987)
This oldie but goodie takes a look at the Vietnam War, a topic that is not often covered in the modern film industry. The movie is a book adaptation that takes the audience into the platoon of U.S Marines that are training for battle. Once the training is over and graduation takes place, the movies continues to follow two of the main men in their journeys into the Tet offensive. This movie provides you with the harsh reality of life in boot camp and life during war.
4. ‘Saving Private Ryan’ (1998)
Tom Hanks and Matt Damon star in this well-known Steven Spielberg movie that takes place during World War II’s invasion of Normandy. Tom Hank’s character, Captain Miller is asked to go behind enemy lines to retrieve Matt Damon’s character Private James Ryan. James is the last of his four brothers who have all been killed in the war. In order to oblige by the sole survivor policy, Private Ryan must go home to his mother. This story shows not only what it takes to fight in World War II but also the importance of every single man’s life.
3. ‘The Great Escape’ (1963)
This true story takes place during the time of World War II. During that time, German Nazi’s decided to hold the U.S prisoners of war in their new escape proof camp, Stalag Luft III. In the beginning of the film, the prisoners try many different tactics to escape but they all fail. The Germans are confident that they have tried everything and they are positive that the place is escape free. However, the prisoners have experience in escaping and tunneling and decide to make an attempt to break out of the camp by building a tunnel. In this movie, the title says it all. It really is one of the greatest escapes and true stories from WWII.
2. ‘Valkyrie’ (2008)
Tom Cruise stars as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg in this movie based on real life events. Stauffenberg is a Nazi soldier who has been nothing but loyal to Hitler. However, there comes a point where all men have their breaking point. Staufeenberg decided to help the Allies come up with a plan to rid Germany of Hitler. Throughout the movies, expected results take different courses of action and the audience learns that things at wartime do not always go according to plan.
1. ‘Patton’ (1970)
In 1970, Patton was the winner of seven Academy Awards including Best Picture for that year. This movie is the story of the U.S leader General George S. Patton. It follows him throughout his journey during WWII while basing the movie on real life facts. It showcases the true personality of Patton and how his temper leads him on an interesting path during his time as a leader.
