College! No parents, parties, boys, girls, new friends and freedom! Sounds great right? It is! College can be one of the best times of your life. It is the biggest and greatest learning experience. There are so many memories to be made and goals to accomplish. It takes hard work, patience, and dedication to get through and I know that everyone can do it. The transitioning phase into to college is exciting, but it is also full of surprises! Here are a few surprises that I didn’t see coming.
Groceries Eat Your Wallet!
When shopping at home with the parents, I would throw anything in the cart, never once stopping to look at the price. In college, it is the exact opposite. Spending your own money for groceries is a different story. Now, I look at the price of everything before I toss it in the cart. I carefully budget my money and make sure to get the things that I absolutely need first. Store brand items will become your best friend.
Professors Actually Care
In high school everyone makes it seem as if the professors don’t care about the students. We are told that they will not help you and everything will be dome on your own. There are a few professors like that, but most of them really do care about their students. They do their best to help the students succeed. You just have to be willing to help yourself.
$20 Can Take You a Long Way
In high school I thought that $20 was chump change! I quickly realized, that is not the case in college. There is so much more that can be done with it. For most, at home, your basic needs were given and you spent most of you money on extra stuff. In college you have to worry about both. Before you can blink, that $20 bill is gone.
It Turns Out Freedom is Nothing But Missing…
When entering college, most students are happy to get away from their parents. They’re excited about being on there own. In the beginning the freedom is great, until you get sick and no one is there to comfort you. You start to get tired of fast food and begin to miss those home cooked meals and family gatherings. Everyone will get past the homesickness, but there are still those little moments of missing home.
You Find Yourself
College is the last chance to make as many mistakes as you can and learn from them, all while in a nurturing environment. It is your chance to figure out your purpose in life and what you want to become. It is a time where you make friends, lose friends, than gain life long friends. Fall in love, out of love, just to find your one true love. There will be hard times, but there are many more great times to outweigh the tough ones. With a great support system, you will enjoy your college experience and come out on top.
