monique colemanAs host of GimmeMo, a talk show for teens, Monique Coleman has come a long way since her High School Musical days. we talked to Monique about her future plans for GimmeMo, her role as the first-ever UN Youth Champion (!!), and the three people who inspire her.

MyEveryzine: What gave you the idea to start GimmeMo?

Monique Coleman: I’ve always been passionate about youth and I feel very blessed to have been in a film that reached SO many young people. In 2009, my good friend Elizabeth Berkley asked me to write a quote about her amazing organization for girls “Ask Elizabeth.” Writing that quote inspired me to think about the kind of impact that I would want to make someday. As a joke, I started toying around with different names and when I got to “GimmeMo” a light bulb went on and I stayed up all night writing down ideas that weeks later I put into action.

ME: I’ve watched YouTube clips of GimmeMo’s first season. How is the show different this season?

MC: Season one was really about exploration. I wanted to better understand some of the issues that young people were dealing with. I investigated issues like youth homelessness, bullying, self-esteem, and inking. The episodes were 8-15 minutes long and covered different aspects of each topic. The second season is about engagement. We filmed each 1-hour episode live and relied heavily on social media and audience interaction.

ME: What is your favorite part about shooting a show?

MC: My favorite part is the fact that it’s live. There’s a rush that comes from having a studio audience and getting to manage every thing on the spot. To me, the live aspect keeps it real, authentic, and electric. Also, I can’t stress enough how lucky I am to work with the amazing young people that make the show come together each week. They are truly the best part!

ME: What was your favorite topic to cover in season two?

MC: My favorite topic so far was “Let’s Talk About Sex.” The real issue we were arriving to was whether there was such a thing as “healthy sex” for young people or if it was best to abstain all together. It was a raw and dynamic dialog with a sex education professor, a 15-year-old male, and a female college student. The perspectives were diverse and interesting. It’s definitely a topic I want to revisit in more detail.

ME: What do you think is the biggest issue facing young women today?

MC: In America, I think one of the biggest issues facing young women is self-esteem and the pressure to be perfect. There are so many pressures to be a certain size or fit an unattainable standard. I also think that finding love while pursing a big career can be challenging. Globally, and particularly in developing countries not having a voice and experiencing unthinkable violence and abuse is the biggest issue they face.

ME: Do you have a motto?

MC: I have so many and they change all the time. Lately, I’ve been living by a yoga saying, “Do your practice. All is coming” by Patabi Jois. My favorite quote is “The jump is so frightening between where I am and where I want to be; because of all I may become, I will close my eyes and leap” by Maryanne Radmacher.

ME: Who are your role models?

MC: Oprah and Martin Luther King Jr. are tied in the top spot. My mom is a close second, and ANY person who’s ever tried anything difficult and not given up.

ME: What would you say is the single thing that makes you happy?

MC: Inspiring others to be happy.

ME: Can you speak about your involvement with the UN?

MC: In 2010, I was appointed the first ever UN Youth Champion for the International Year of Youth. I then self-initiated and funded a global tour to better understand the most pressing issues facing today’s youth. I visited 24 countries in a span of six months, and engaged with thousands of young people. When I returned, I spoke at the High Level meeting on youth, hosted the Year of Youth Culmination event, and continued to participate and engage with UN organizations and events. I’ve worked closely with UNICEF, UNFPA, ILO, and UNESCO. I’ve also had the incredible honor of interviewing the Secretary General Ban ki Moon and co-hosting the UN Foundation Gala. I’m presently the Girl Up Youth Champion for the United Nations Foundation (who’s purpose is to further the efforts of the United Nations).

ME: What else are you up to (as an actress and philanthropist)?

MC: I just wrapped an independent film called Girlrillaz and recently attended the Global Social Business Summit in Vienna, Austria.

Emma Stone, star of
Emma Stone graces the cover of Interview magazine

They say Interview magazine cover girl Emma Stone is the “It Girl;” we at ME say Emma has the talent and amazing personality that will never go out of style. Say “Aloha” to Emma as she stars alongside Bradley Cooper and Rachel McAdams. Until then, here are 10 things to know about Emma Stone.

1. She’s from Arizona
Although she spends lots of time in Los Angeles and New York, her home is Scottsdale, Arizona
2. Her name is Emily

Emma’s full name is Emily Jean Stone. But she decided to go by Emma instead of Emily because there was already an Emily Stone registered at he Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG). In fact. IMDB has four Emily Stones! Good move, Emma!

3. She has a twin…
…Well not really. She actually had a stunt double for the famous “Dirty Dancing” lift with super hottie “Crazy Stupid Love” co-star Ryan Gosling. She tried her best to do it herself, but she was terrified and even accidentally kicked Ryan in the throat! “I ran for him to pick me up, and I don’t know what happened,” she told Jay Leno. “I went spider monkey around his head and kicked him in the throat.”

4. Emma Stone takes iPhone videos, like a normal girl!
Emma loves Taylor Swift. When Taylor stopped in Los Angeles for her Speak Now World Tour Emma was right there singing all the lyrics with her friends, dancing around with her “Crazy Stupid Love” co-star Joey King and even taking videos with her iPhone! When we saw that (We were at the concert, too!), we knew Emma is just one of the girls (who happens to have a pretty cool and very public job)!

5. Emma Stone loves Hot Pockets
Especially the meatball and mozzarella flavored Hot Pockets. Hey, everyone deserves a guilty pleasure! #NoJudgement

6. She’s obsessed with “Ace of Cakes”

This “Superbad” star is super chill. A good time to Emma is staying at home, getting comfortable and watching an “Ace of Cakes” marathon.

7.“The Help” is Emma’s first movie Adapted from a book
Yeah “Easy A” mentioned “The Scarlett Letter,” but the film wasn’t inspired by the book. Emma’s mom is a super fan of Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel “The Help.”

8. She deleted her Facebook account
“I got addicted to FarmVille, so had to get off,” she said. Looking for Emma Stone’s Twitter? She doesn’t have one of those either.

9. Paul McCartney designed her tattoo
Emma and her mom wanted to get matching tattoos based on her mom’s favorite song “Blackbird.” Emma wrote a letter to Sir Paul McCartney explaining the significance and her mother surviving breast cancer. The former Beatle then sketched bird feet design and sent it back to them for the tattoos!

10. She’s not a natural red-head
“My hair grows out of my head blonde, but I usually dye it red,” Emma said. After Judd Apatow suggested she go red for his movie “Superbad,” she liked it so much she stuck with it.

Glee Season 4 cast

With hit TV show entering its senior year (season 4), Glee shows it hasn’t stopped believing in the formula that earned them success— a diverse cast, a few heartthrobs and those oh-so-wonderful mashups. In anticipation for Glee’s new season and time slot (Thursdays at 9p) FOX threw a great listening party to preview five songs from the season. These dance beats and earworms not only had us humming along, but also gave us a few clues as to what’s in store for the season.

“Dance Again/Americano”— Cassandra (Kate Hudson)
This high-energy mashup of Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga’s hits is totally dance worthy, and it shows off Kate Hudson’s impressive pipes (Take that, Gwyneth Paltrow)! Hudson gracefully switches between her mid and high registers throughout this groove. Look for this to debut on the premiere episode. Something tells us she’s be schooling Rachel (Lea Michele) on passion for the art of Broadway.

“It’s Time” — Blaine (Darren Criss)
Can’t get enough Blaine? You’re in luck. Darren Criss will have lots of screen time as he deals with his relationship with Kurt (Chris Colfer) and restocking the Glee Club with talent. Darren tackles the Imagine Dragons song with grace. But taking a deeper look into the lyrics it looks like there may be trouble in paradise:  “It’s time to begin, isn’t it?/ I get a little bit bigger, but then I’ll admit/ I’m just the same as I was/Now don’t you understand/That I’m never changing who I am” We can’t tell if this is Blaine reassuring Kurt as they embark on a (Mini Spoiler Alert!!!) long-distance relationship or if their relationship will show growing pains.

“Boys/Boyfriend” — Artie (Kevin McHale) and Blaine
This Artie/Blaine duet mashing up Britney Spears’ “Boys” and Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” is their first duet ever. It sounds great (duh!), but we’re even more excited to see it on screen.
Kevin McHale and Darren Criss revealed the two had to deliver the the song in an über cheesy boy band type performance. Shouldn’t be a problem for Kevin since he was in a boy band (NLT), right? Kevin admitted Darren was the bigger cheese ball! That’s great to know because by the sound of it, we need a little more expression from Darren, hopefully we get more when we see him perform it in the “Britney 2.0” episode.

“Gimme More”— Brittany (Heather Morris)
It wouldn’t be a Britney episode without Brittany S. Pierce (Heather Morris) to rock out a Spears number. Chord Overstreet (Sam) revealed the Glee Club will back her up in the dance-heavy number. No doubt, Heather, a former dancer for Beyonce will outshine them all like she did last Britney episode!

“Call Me Maybe”— Glee Club
OK, Glee, if you did Rebecca Black’s “Friday,” we guess you had to do Carly Rae Jepson’s mega earworm of the summer. Luckily there was much to delight our ears despite hearing the song 12 billion times. A new voice opens the song— maybe it’s  Jacob Artist who will be playing Jake Puckerman, Puck’s (Mark Salling) younger brother. The Glee Club will battle it out to this song, perhaps to an assignment Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) doles out. This is our first time hearing the new Glee club and we immediately notice there aren’t any powerhouse, “park and bark,” bring the house down voices that Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Rachel (Lea Michele) delivered every episode. Further in the song we found potential of one (another new cast member, we suspect is Alex Newell’s Unique) but, hate to be the bearer of bad new, she’s not as good as Mercedes. We’ll give it another chance, since “Call Me Maybe” isn’t the best vehicle to tout one’s vocal prowess.

Which song do you want the cast to sing this season?

Ben and Kate TV Review

This September, Fox’s new show, Ben and Kate, attempt to be the unique and quirky show of fall 2012 but end up just as bland as their title. Ben (Nate Faxon) and Kate (Dakota Johnson) play brother and sister. Ben is the annoying older brother who has never grown up and Kate is the younger sister who grew up a little too fast when she became pregnant at a young age. Now, with Kate trying to make ends meet for her daughter, and her brother always interrupting her life, she’s finding it’s a little hard to balance family, a love life and motherhood.

In the premiere episode, Ben rolls into town unexpected and barrages into Kate’s house unannounced while she is on a date. Kate immediately wants to know why he is in town disrupting her life once again. Instantaneously, Ben’s brotherly instincts kick in when he thinks  something is wrong with Kate’s boyfriend. But Ben— obsessed with his own love life— starts thinking of ways to crash his ex-girlfriends wedding.

Throughout all of the obnoxious things that Ben does to get what he wants, the audience ends up seeing a strong bond between Ben and Kate near the end of the show. While both characters end up being overly awkward instead of fun and quirky like FOX wanted them to appear, they both tend to get rather annoying very quickly. Even through all the strangeness, there is a small silver lining to this show. Ben and Kate showcase that when family members need each other then you stand behind them one hundred percent.
Ben overhears a conversation that Kate’s boyfriend is having and Ben sees a red flag. Instead of crashing the wedding, he rushes to get to Kate’s side. Once Kate realizes he hasn’t gone to the wedding, she makes sure he gets there even though she was against the idea from the beginning. While both characters appear to be selfish from the start, they both end up caring about each other more.
While Ben and Kate has potential to be a decent show, the pilot episode did not have the excitement I was expecting. The characters were very strange and at other times very irritating. The concept for the TV show is a good idea, and TV needs more shows centered around family,
but the cast and script brought nothing to the table this time around.

zoe kazan

With Ruby Sparks, an indie flick making it to the big screen this summer, actress-turned-screenwriter Zoe Kazan is on a major roll (she wrote the screenplay and stars in the film!). Although Zoe has held over a dozen on-screen roles in both movies and television since 2003, fans are pretty much left in the dark when it comes to Zoe’s personal life, as she likes to keep it fairly private. Luckily, with a hefty bit of research, ME is ready to share 10 awesoME tidbits about the blue-eyed celebrity, who is making a big splash in Hollywood.

1. Zoe used to help foreign students write their applications essays for graduate school.  When she looks back on her previous job, she says it was demoralizing and slightly illegal(!).

2. The starlet is not only beautiful, but also well-educated. Zoe graduated from Yale in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in Theater.

3. Her screenwriting skills were foreseeable: the actress’s mom and dad, Robin Swicord, respectively, are both Oscar nominated screenwriters.

4. Zoe’s favorite shows include The Office, Mad Men, and Family Guy. She says they are her “must-sees.”

5. She has a five-pound toy poodle named Alice.

6. The classic movie, A Streetcar Named Desire, was directed by her grandfather, legendary director, Elia Kazan.

7. Zoe loves junk food.  She favors pizza, dumplings and guacamole.

8. Cutie Paul Dano is her boyfriend of more than three years, and stars with her in Ruby Sparks!

9. Zoe’s favorite board games are Scrabble and Bananagrams.

10. She has had to appear naked in numerous plays, which is why she now appreciates any show she does that lets her keep her clothes on. Eek!
